First champagne adapted for space travel completes groundbreaking orbital mission
Lux Exposé
The stars aligned for a most unexpected toast this summer. After a journey that began with liftoff on June 25, 2025, and ended with a smooth return to Earth on July 15, the world’s first champagne made for space – Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar – has landed back in flawless form. It wasn’t just a bottle that re-entered the atmosphere; it was a capsule of elegance, engineering, and effervescence, marking a nine-year mission that pushed the boundaries of both oenology and outer space.
What began in 2017 as a bold idea quickly transformed into one of the most ambitious collaborations in the world of luxury beverages. Maison Mumm, the famed French Champagne House founded in 1827, teamed up with an elite crew of visionaries: Octave de Gaulle of SPADE, a pioneer in extraterrestrial design; the French space agency CNES; and astronaut Jean-François Clervoy, who has clocked in three NASA missions. Their shared goal? To make champagne a part of the future of space travel.
